What is an ATF service?
ATF stands for automatic transmission fluid. It lubricates the gearbox, helps cool it and, in many designs, carries the hydraulic pressure that makes gears change.
Over time the fluid ages and collects wear particles. An ATF service replaces it, and on many gearboxes also involves a new filter or seals, depending on the design. The exact method varies a lot between gearbox types, which is why we check your model first.
How often should the gearbox fluid be changed?
There is no single answer. Some makers describe their gearbox fluid as lifetime fill, while others set a service schedule. In practice, intervals depend on the gearbox, the maker's schedule and how the car is driven.
Frequent stop-and-go traffic, towing or hot weather can put extra load on the fluid. If you are not sure, check your handbook and ask us what suits your gearbox. Our service schedule guide explains how to read the maker's guidance.
What are the signs of a gearbox problem?
| Symptom | Possible area | What we check |
|---|---|---|
| Jerky or harsh shifts | Fluid condition, valve body, software | Fluid, stored codes, adaptation data |
| Delay when selecting Drive or Reverse | Low fluid, internal wear, pressure | Fluid level, leaks, codes |
| Engine revs but car does not accelerate | Slipping clutches or torque converter | Codes, fluid, road test |
| Whining or humming | Fluid, bearings, pump | Fluid, noise on road test |
| Gearbox warning or limp mode | Control unit, sensor, mechanical fault | Fault codes and live data |
Any of these can have simpler causes than a failed gearbox. We test before drawing conclusions.
What happens when I bring in a car with gearbox trouble?
- You describe when the problem happens, such as cold start, hot, or while accelerating.
- We check the fluid level and condition where the gearbox allows it.
- We read fault codes from the transmission control unit.
- We road test the car where it is safe to do so.
- We explain what we found, whether a fluid service may help, and what else could be involved.
- We quote, and you approve before work starts.
Will fresh fluid fix my gearbox?
Sometimes it improves shifting, especially if the old fluid was in poor condition. But if there is mechanical wear or a control fault, new fluid will not repair it. We would rather tell you honestly what a fluid service can and cannot do for your car than promise an outcome.
If the gearbox has already been slipping for some time, fresh fluid may not undo the wear. Acting early, when the first symptoms appear, usually leaves you with more options.
Diagnosing the warning light or fault code first often helps. See our diagnostics page for the process.
Where can I get the gearbox checked?
We are at 143 Bukit Timah Road, Newton Circus, inside the Shell station. Send us your car model and the symptoms through the contact page, and we will tell you what to expect.
Questions owners ask
How much is an ATF service?
The cost depends on the gearbox type, the fluid it needs and whether parts are involved. We do not state a figure before seeing the car. After inspection we give a quote, and you agree to it before the work starts.
Is gearbox oil really lifetime?
Some makers use the term, but it does not mean the fluid never ages. Many owners choose to service it anyway, depending on the gearbox and use. Check your handbook, and ask us what suits your car.
My car jerks when changing gear. Is it serious?
It could be as simple as aged fluid or a software adaptation, or it could be wear inside the gearbox. We read the codes, check the fluid and test the car before telling you what we think is behind it.
Can I keep driving with a gearbox warning light?
If the car is in limp mode or shifting badly, drive gently and avoid long trips or heavy traffic, then have it inspected soon. If it slips badly, makes loud noises or loses drive, stop safely and avoid driving further.
