What is a pre-purchase car inspection?
It is a structured check of a used car done by a workshop on your behalf. The aim is to find faults, past damage and upcoming costs before you buy, not after.

When should you book the inspection?

Timing also matters in Singapore's market. Good cars move fast, so tell the seller early that you will need an inspection slot, and be ready to book quickly. A short delay is usually acceptable, and a seller with a sound car rarely minds.
What do you receive after the inspection?
You should come away with findings you can understand, not just a list of codes. A useful result includes:
- What was checked and what was found, area by area.
- Which issues are urgent, which are minor, and which can wait.
- Signs of previous accident repair or neglected maintenance.

Also think about running costs: a car near the end of its COE life, or with deferred maintenance, may need work soon after purchase.
Consider where the car has been kept, too. A car that has lived in a covered carpark will often look different from one left in the sun for years, and flood or water exposure, though uncommon, is worth asking about directly.
Is an inspection worth it for a car sold by a dealer?
Yes, it still gives you a separate view. A dealer's own checks serve the dealer's sale, while an independent report is prepared for you.
The same applies to cars sold privately. The more expensive or complex the car, the more value an independent look tends to add. A short, calm checklist before buying is far easier than a surprise afterwards.
